The Gift That Brought Back A Cherished Tradition

It was the first time Steven had ever saw his father weep.

They had just spent two days driving halfway across Canada and another day moving into his downtown Halifax apartment. Now it was time to start his first day at his new career, and as he said his final goodbye and hugged his father harder than he ever has, he saw tears roll down the old man’s cheek.

At first, Steven didn’t know what to make of it. So he smiled a little wider, hugged a little harder, and said, “It’s alright, Dad. I’ll be OK. I’ll give you a call this weekend.”

But his father’s tears stuck with him long after the weekend’s call. Even as his calls home turned into a cherished tradition, he knew his father yearned for more.

The tears he witnessed told him so.

Then one Christmas morning everything changed.

Steven watched with anticipation as his father opened the gift. “It’s a tablet, Dad, and it’s going to make our calls so much better.”

He knew exactly why. He knew that all his father wanted was to be as close to him as possible – to see his face when he laughed and share a cocktail together on a Friday night. Just like they had always done.

And with this gift, halfway across Canada didn’t feel so far away anymore, and a cherished tradition was brought back to life.
